We recently published a paper on our experience using the Retisert implant for sympathetic ophthalmia in the Journal Ophthalmology. Implantation into the eyes of eight patients stabilized vision, provided inflammatory control, and reduced dependence on systemic immunosuppression.

Although I have never operated on the wrong eye, I have had three near misses. A review of nearly 1000 surgical cases at five different hospital operating rooms revealed a common pattern that lead to the wrong eye being set for surgery.

Sometimes abnormal blood vessels grow near the optic nerve rather than underneath the fovea. The best way to treat these "peripapillary" choroidal neovascular membranes was studied by our laboratory.
